The Unclaimed Property Division is a repository for money and other personal assets considered lost or abandoned. Unclaimed property includes:
checking and savings accounts
certificates of deposit
gift certificates
paid-up life insurance
insurance payments
commissions
unpaid wages
uncashed checks
death benefits
dividends
money orders
refunds
stocks
contents of safe deposit boxes
An example is a savings account that had no withdrawal or deposit activity for more than five years. After unsuccessful attempts
to contact the owner, the bank turns over the account and the owner's information to Unclaimed Property, where the money is held
until a claim is verified. The names of people and organizations with unclaimed property are publised once a year in Nebraska
newspapers and are available any time at www.treasurer.org. You can also check to see if
you have unclaimed property by calling 402-471-8497 or 877-572-9688 (toll-free).
